Toolbar Explained

The Photoshop toolbar can be a bit confusing (at times, intimidating) to the new user. But once you get the hang of it, using it becomes a breeze. These are the tools that you will be using for any Photoshop tutorial that you find here. So even if you get hung up or confused where to find a particular tool specified in another tutorial you can always come back here and check it out.

I will be breaking down the toolbar into individual tools and give you a brief idea about each of them so you will be familiar with their purpose when using them later on in tutorials.

When you click and drag on the marquee tool, this is the menu that opens.

It contains 4 tools:

Rectangular Marquee:
Used to select a rectangular area. By holding Shift and dragging you can select a square area. Now try and see what happens when you hold Alt and then drag. You will find that the selection starts at the centre(instead of the top left) and begins to grow outward as you start dragging.

Elliptical Marquee:
Used to select an elliptical area. By holding Shift and draggin you can select a circle. Again try holding Alt and then dragging. The elliptical selection grows from the center like before.

Single Row Marquee:
Selects a single 1px height row.

Single Column Marquee:
Selects a single 1px wide column.

Move Tool:
This is the move tool and is one of the most frequently used tools in Photoshop. Keep in mind the shortcut (V)
