We will create one more layer. This time call it ‘red’ and draw a red circle on the canvas. Again apply the same layer style we applied for the other layers. So now your canvas should look something like this:



You will notice that the circle layer is covering up the flower layer and the rectangle layer behind it. This is because this layer is appearing above the other 2 layers in the layer palette. You could try dragging the ‘red’ layer below the green and blue layers on the layer palette and see what happens.



Now of course, the rectangle appears on top because the layer ‘green’ is on top.


You can go right ahead and experiment now. See what happens when you change the layer opacity or fill opacity for each layer. Try fiddling with the blending modes. Add more layers and try out new styles.

As an introduction to layers, I hope this tutorial has served its purpose. By now, I hope you would have understood the basic concepts behind ‘layers’ in Photoshop and be in a position to use them in your projects.
